Hearing Loss

  • What is hearing loss?

Hearing loss is a condition where a person has difficulty hearing sounds fully or clearly. It can affect one or both ears and it can be mild, moderate, severe or profound.

  • Types of hearing loss
  1. Conductive hearing loss: This type occurs when sound cannot travel properly through the outer or middle ear. Common causes are earwax buildup, ear infections, fluid in the middle ear or perforated eardrum. Good news is that it is often temporary or medically treatable.
  2. Sensorineural hearing loss: This type happens when there is damage to the inner ear (cochlea) or the hearing nerve. Common causes are aging (presbycusis), noise exposure, genetic factors, or certain illnesses or medications. This type is usually permanent, but hearing aids can help.
  3. Mixed hearing loss: This type combines conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. Treatment depends on addressing the conductive part first, then managing the remaining hearing loss.
